Indicating the resolve of the Government to give an immediate makeover to the Police Department in the State capital, the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has instructed the Finance Department to issue orders for sanctioning money for purchase of vehicles to be used by the police forces in Hyderabad and Cyberabad.
Mr. Rao had earlier sanctioned Rs. 300 crore for vehicles including 1,500 motorcycles and 1,650 Innova vehicles for police patrolling to ensure that the response time is brought down to minimum level.
State DGP Anurag Sharma, City Police Commissioner M. Mahender Reddy and Cyberabad Commissioner C.V. Anand on Monday submitted fresh proposals to Mr. Rao, also to procure heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks and troop carriers, medium and light vehicles such as jeeps and cars and special purpose vehicles. All of them have to be purchased within the Rs. 300 crore budget.
An official release said various designs of vehicles proposed were shown to Mr. Rao for his consent. The DGP apprised him that the mobility of police force which would improve with new vehicles was important to enhance its performance. Quick response of the force to meet law and order problems preserved precious lives and protected property besides instilling confidence and a sense of security in public.
Mr. Rao asked the department to focus on police reforms in the city initially and then extend them to other districts.
He wanted orientation programmes for personnel handling the vehicles and a central command for Hyderabad and Cyberabad police.
