Kashmiri doc-couple braves floods to attend cancer meet

September 18, 2014 12:34 am | Updated April 20, 2016 05:38 am IST - HYDERABAD:

“We battled the floods and our houses were inundated. Believe it or not, we had to travel by boat, catch a mini truck and take help from fellow citizens on the way to the airport. All roads were blocked but we still made it,” they said.

Braving ravaging floods in their native Kashmir, doctor-couple Talib Khan and Shaqul-Amar risked all they could so that they could attend the ongoing cancer summit in Hyderabad, where they would have a chance to meet the best cancer specialists in business.

Dr. Shaqul-Amar is an assistant professor in Radiation Oncology while Dr. Khan is an assistant professor in Anaesthesia at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Kashmir.

“There were several other doctors in Kashmir who wanted to attend this conference but could not because of the floods. We have never seen such floods in our lifetime,” Dr. Khan said.

Moreover, Dr. Shaqul-Amar was also a member of the organising committee of the summit here.

“Back home in Kashmir, We have heard a lot about Hyderabad and I am glad that I made it to the city. Besides attending the sessions on cancer, We have also visited all the major landmarks and tasted the Nizami cuisine,” she said.
