Karimnagar jail superintendent N. Shiva Kumar Goud, who landed in controversy over unusual freedom given to prisoner B. Mohan Reddy to meet his family members in prison, was transferred to Mahabubnagar jail on Friday. Mahabubnagar jail superintendent Dasharatharam Reddy was posted in his place.

Three weeks ago, The Hindu published a report on how Mr. Reddy, a suspended police Assistant Sub-Inspector, was granted an opportunity to meet his family inside Karimnagar jail. The report was based on a video clip and compelled officials to order an inquiry into the meeting of Mr. Reddy with his family members.

The suspended policeman was facing a series of cases of abetment to suicide, illegal occupation of properties of others, illegal amassing of wealth, cheating and operating finance business without permissions. Victims of the controversial cop had charged that Karimnagar jail officials extended favourable treatment to him, brushing aside rules.

Prison officials maintained that the jail superintendent had the discretionary power to give ‘special permission’ to the prisoner to meet his family or lawyer. However, they conceded that there were procedural lapses on the issue as the superintendent had failed to record the details of such permissions given in Mr. Reddy’s case.
