A jilted youth allegedly attacked his own cousin, whom he was engaged to, with a sharp weapon, angry over her marriage to another person in Kandukur in Ranga Reddy district on Sunday morning.
Hailing from Muralinagar in Kandukur of Ranga Reddy district, the accused Nanavath Raju’s engagement was performed with Saroja (21) on February 6. After the ceremony, he gifted gold ornaments, new clothes and other valuables to her. They also visited several tourist places in the city, but on Saturday he came to know that Saroja had married her lover in a temple.
Infuriated over the development, Raju went to her parents’ house and picked up an argument with them. They tried to pacify him stating that the issue would be settled after discussing it with elders.
On Sunday, Raju saw Saroja and her husband standing at the Kandukur bus stop. Unable to control his anger, he went to a nearby cobbler’s shop, picked up a sharp-edged weapon and attacked her resulting in serious injuries on her back. Passersby intervened and rushed her to a private hospital where her condition was said to be stable.
“We booked an attempt to murder case against Raju under Section 307 of the IPC and arrested him,” said Kandukur Inspector S. Chakrapani.
He said Raju was working as a supervisor with a cab company at Hi-Tec City, while Saroja was a nurse in a private hospital at Hayathnagar.
