It’s raining awards for city-based defence scientists

They bag most of the DRDO awards for 2015

DRDO Labs here celebrated a proud moment when a significant number of DRDO awards for 2015 were won by senior scientists working at local laboratories for their contribution to various successful missions and diversified projects.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley gave away 11 awards to the scientists at a function in New Delhi on Friday.

D. Sreenivasulu Reddy, DRDO Fellow, Research Centre Imarat, was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

With more than four decades of expertise in electrical configuration design for advanced avionics systems, automation of checkout for missile systems, system engineering and analysis for hardware and interface requirements, he was recognised for his national contributions.

Mr. Reddy played a vital role in the development and flight evaluation of the country’s first ballistic missile Prithvi, which was successfully flight tested in 1988 and ship launched Dhanush missile. Design and development of two layered endo and exo atmospheric interceptors as part of the BMD programme was one of the premier scientific achievements of the country, according to a release.

The following are the awards won by city-based scientists: D. Lakshminarayana, Project Director, Agni, Advanced Systems Laboratory along with A.P. Vardhan, DRDA, won Scientist of the Year Award for contribution to missile systems.

T. Raghu received the same award for his contributions to processing material for defence applications. The Advanced Systems Laboratory was adjudged the best lab.

S. Venugopal, Programme Director, Astra, DRDL and J. Shanker Rao, Outstanding Scientist, DLRL along with their teams were conferred the Path Breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development Award.

Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance was conferred on Manoj Kumar Buragohain and his team from ASL for their contribution to Agni missions.

M. Kannan, Research Centre Imarat, along with his team was conferred with the special award for strategic contributions for their pioneering contribution concerning the design, development and delivery of indigenous inertial navigation systems for ship applications.
