‘IT professional Salman still a free man’

Close watch on those visiting websites propagating ISIS

Hyderabad Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy, on Wednesday denied reports that the city police had arrested Munawad Salman (30), a software professional, for allegedly planning to travel to Iraq and join Islamic State.

“Salman is one of those men, who were earlier detained for trying to travel to Iraq and join the ISIS. As a follow up exercise we asked him to come and give an undertaking to the Revenue Divisional Officer (magistrate) for good conduct,” Mr. Reddy said.

Last month, the city police had detained a few youngsters who were allegedly trying to travel to Iraq to join the ISIS.

They were later brought to the city and counselled and handed over to their parents.

The Commissioner said that the city police, along with other national security agencies, had mounted surveillance on a few persons who are visiting certain websites propagating ISIS activities.

“Action will be taken depending on the intensity of the activities one is involved in. It all depends on case to case basis,” Mr. Reddy said.

Mr. Reddy denied reports of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) regrouping in the city.
