Exhorting IPS probationers of the 69th batch to become role models for the country’s youth, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday suggested them to follow a four-point framework to achieve that.

The framework comprises hard work, honesty, positive attitude and rendering justice, he said. Mr. Singh was addressing the IPS probationers after watching their “excellent” Passing Out Parade at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here.

A person wants to earn money to have house, vehicle and other comforts. IAS or IPS officers accrue all wuch facilities automatically soon after joining the coveted government service, he said.

A young police officer would be in direct contact with the people. “It is up to you to decide whether to be in the rat race of competitive consumerism and become super rich or emerge as a professionally efficient and morally superior role model,” Mr. Rajnath Singh said.

Hard work earns respect to the police officers. People would learn about their integrity irrespective of whether they carry out their actions secretly or from discreet places. “People of the district know how honest the Superintendent of Police is because of his or her decisions. This honesty coupled with your financial and intellectual integrity makes your job easier,” the Home Minister said.

Positive attitude was the third principle a police officer should possess to serve the people. The Minister appealed to the young probationers to think from the perspective of the complainants or victims coming to them and take a decision. “Use social media and mobile technology to move closer to people,” he told them. Mr. Rajnath Singh asked the IPS probationers not to forget the word ‘justice’ they had used while taking the pledge during the parade. Take decisions to render justice to people. Even political leaders respect civil servants adopting these four qualities.

The Minister congratulated NPA Director D.R. Doley Burman and its trainers for training the probationers to perfection. He assured all support to the NPA and announced that ₹5 crore would be sanctioned from the Ministry of Home Affairs Welfare Fund to the NPA’s Welfare Society.

Atmosphere of unrest

“An atmosphere of unrest and fear is prevailing the world over. Operatives of terror outfits Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda are killing innocent people and threats of using atom bomb are also being made,” the Union Minister said.

While Cyber attacks were being made by some, others were trying to influence public opinion through fake news, he observed.
