Incois developing 3D protocol for tsunami warning

Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan, has stated that Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) is developing a GIS-based 3D protocol for Cuddalore and Nagapattinam areas for more efficient and effective preparedness to face tsunamis and cyclones.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a national workshop on “Indian tsunami early warning system: Progress, challenges and future road map” here on Friday, he said details of every individual living in the areas would be in the 3D protocol. The pilot project would be replicated in other areas based on its success in the two areas.

He stressed the need for working out a strategy to have sophisticated coordination among all States on natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones in the next two years.

Hailing the efficacy of early warning information generated by INCOIS, the Union Minister said it did not issue even one false alarm during the last seven years of its existence when advanced countries like Japan had issued and withdrawn false alarms on tsunamis several times.

Dr Harsh Vardhan also indicated that raising the age of retirement in premier research organisations was under the active consideration of the Centre.
