In Hyderabad, they flock to the pigeons

March 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:04 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The next time you find a selfie of a teenager from old city holding a fantail pigeon, do not be surprised. For the youngsters here have not parted ways with the ‘nawabi’ hobby of pigeon keeping.

Pigeon breeders say the hobby has increasingly caught on among them in the last few years. “Some keep pigeons as a hobby, while a few breed it for commercial purposes. But the fact is, there is a huge increase, and demand is high for fancy pigeons,” says Taher, a pigeon breeder from Chanchalguda.

Many youngsters now look at pigeon-breeding as a source of income. Thanks to the social media and free online advertisement portals.

“I regularly post classifieds on online advertisement portals and get a good response. Youngsters, including students, contact me and purchase the pigeons,” says Salman, a B. Com graduate from Nampally.
