India will have a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of more than 7.5 per cent beating China this year, said S. Ramadorai, chairperson, governing board, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, here on Wednesday.
Addressing the second convocation of the TISS, Mr. Ramadorai said that it is important that the aspirations of the youth influenced by India’s growth are nurtured and that it does not lead to an expectation mismatch. He further stated that institutes like TISS play a vital role in advocacy and reform of public policies, empowering communities towards prosperity.
“TISS Hyderabad has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to build employable skills among government college students over three years in line with the USSD model,” said Mr. Ramadorai. He added that the objective is to reach 32,000 students over 100 colleges in three years as part of the State and Central government’s skill mission. The TCS chairman also apprised that funding to construct a campus in Kothur mandal, Mahabubnagar district, is awaited. TISS institutions not only address commitment to provide access to higher education, but also provide employable skills, and promise caste and gender diversity, said Mr. Ramadorai. On Wednesday, 169 MA and M.Phil students from the fields of education, human resource management, rural development and governance, development studies, natural resources, etc. were conferred with their degrees at the convocation. Vijay Kumar, former Chief Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh was were among those present.
