The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) that develops green rating programmes and offers certification, said it plans to certify as many as 1,000 products by 2022.

Speaking at the GreenPro Summit here on Tuesday, CII-Green Products and Services chairman Parasuraman R said, “At the moment, a total of 375 products from over 25 manufacturers have adopted GreenPro and these include building construction like cement. As we go more and more into certification, we must ensure that demand comes from these kinds of certification which will benefit all the stakeholders.”

Consumer products

Steps are under way to include industrial products as well. “In the days to come, the CII will include industrial products and technologies and consumer products as well for making them green,” he said. Speakers at the summit said while the overall construction contributes to 12% of the GDP, building construction accounts for 8%. This, they said, translates into ₹10 lakh crore. IGBC Policy and Advocacy Committee chairman V. Suresh said the market potential for green building products was estimated to be $300 billion by 2025. He also pointed out that many green products were available in the country at competitive prices.

Cost reduction

As a result, there has been a reduction in the cost of constructing green buildings. The incremental cost of green buildings was around 3% which can be recovered in two or three years by means of a reduction in operational cost, IGBC Hyderabad Chapter chairman C. Shekar Reddy said.

The session also saw GreenPro certifications to a total of 13 companies.
