IAS officer tests positive for Swine flu

September 14, 2009 04:45 pm | Updated 05:18 pm IST - Hyderabad:

A senior IAS officer in Andhra Pradesh, who is working as a district Collector, has been affected with the A(H1N1) influenza virus, the State Health Minister D. Nagender confirmed here on Monday.

Since the Collector meets lot of people everyday, he might have contacted the virus from any affected person, Mr. Nagender told reporters at the Secretariat here.

The Minister, however, did not divulge further details.

According to Mr. Nagender, the government is closely monitoring the situation, with setting up of additional ventilator-bed facilities and isolation facilities across the state.

Efforts are underway to prevent the spread of the deadly virus and all necessary steps are being taken for early detection and treatment of the disease, he said.

The death toll due to swine flu in Andhra Pradesh rose to nine yesterday with the first swine flu death reported on August 31.

About 300 positive cases of swine flu have been reported since the country’s first swine flu virus (confirmed case) was reported on May 13, when a 23-year-old passenger arrived in Hyderabad from New York.
