The ebay Census 2012 revealed details on trends in online shopping among Hyderabadis

Begumpet buys the most number of dual SIM phones, Tool Kits sell like got cakes in Banjara Hills, Hitech City yearns for Kurtis, men from Jubilee Hills are eager for wrist watches and Somajiguda is game for mobile accessories.

The ebay Census 2012, which revealed details on trends in online shopping among Hyderabadis, also listed the city as the top e-commerce hub in the State.

Guntur is rural champ

More interestingly, Guntur topped the national charts for its volume of transactions among rural hubs. According to the census, the results of which were announced here on Wednesday, Guntur also topped the rural import hubs, and figured in the top 10 rural export hubs.

Andhra Pradesh is the most wired state with 565 e-commerce hubs, followed by Tamil Nadu at 443, Maharashtra at 341 and Uttar Pradesh at 332. However, in terms of the volume of transactions, the state has slipped by two ranks from its fifth position in 2011 to seventh place now.

Tech shopping goes online

Hyderabadis shopped most for tablet PCs, bluetooth headsets, Kurtis, men’s fragrances and camera filters, and chose to import pneumatic valves, headphones, handbags, coins from Malaysia, and camera lenses.

The city has sold the most number of electric shavers online and despite itself suffering from tedious power cuts, sold the most number of emergency lamps. It has also exported most tote bags used by women, and bought most of the video games.

Umbrellas, men’s chronograph watches, lighting accessories, anti-ageing products and peelers and slicers were the most-sold products from here, while movie DVDs, crystal bangles, women’s swimwear, skin lightening creams, and comics were the most-exported products.

Hyderabad stood sixth among all other cities, preceded by Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Bengaluru and Chennai. In the State, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Ongole and Vijayawada followed the city as top e-commerce hubs. Guntur, Doravarisatram, Penukonda, Hiramandalam, and Medikonduru were placed among the top five rural hubs in the state, while Hyderabad, Warangal, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, and Tadepalligudem have been the top export hubs.

The national scene

At national level, India has 4,306 e-commerce hubs, and traded mostly laptop accessories, men’s wallets, tablet PCs, men’s wrist watches and modems. It mostly exported natural diamonds, fashion necklaces, homeopathic remedies, saris and gardening supplies, and imported smartphones, natural diamonds, wrist watches, fashion necklaces, and mobile screen protectors.

The Census is based on analysis of 18 months’ data of online shopping on ebay, between July 2011 and December 2012, informed Vidmay Naini, Head, Retention Marketing, Payments and Imports, ebay India, while addressing a press conference.
