Hyderabad to host World IT Congress in 2018

Decision emerges from a meeting between Nasscom delegation and KCR

The Government of Telangana is planning to give a big push to the information technology industry in the State by hosting the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in 2018. It will be the first WCIT to be held in India.

The decision to hold the event was taken during a meeting of National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) delegation comprising its president R. Chandrashekhar and vice-chairman B.V.R. Mohan Reddy with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao here on Friday. Minister for IT K.T. Rama Rao and other officials also participated in the meeting.

Speaking to newspersons later, Mr. Chandrashekhar said WCIT 2018 was expected to create opportunities for business worth US$ 2 trillion besides helping brand building of Hyderabad, innovation platforms and jobs. He explained that Hyderabad was chosen as the venue for the 2018 event as it was a leading IT hub in the country, had global recognition and there was proactive government and excellent infrastructure in the State.

Issues such as cyber security, global collaborative models, IT continuing education policies, global convergence, future of technology and others would be discussed at the meet to be attended by over 2,500 delegates from 80 countries.

Mr. Rama Rao said the Chief Minister and he would visit the US, the UK and other countries to invite the bigwigs of the IT industry to the 2018 event.

A government delegation would visit the event to be held next year in Brazil as part of the preparations for 2018 event. The State Government would release USD 1 million funds for the event by March.

Earlier, the Chief Minister told the Nasscom delegation that 4G-technology would become available in the State and Telangana would become power surplus by the time the event was held.

He also explained them about the new industrial policy unveiled by the State recently. He stated that 5,000 acres land would be earmarked for IT Park soon and it would have a couple of helipads besides residential, shopping and entertainment facilities.
