There was hectic activity across the city on Tuesday, the eve of Eid-ul-Adha , popularly known as the Bakrid, the festival of sacrifice. The festival falls on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Zil-Hijjah.
Business centres teemed with activity as people thronged the markets to buy new clothes and groceries. Traffic slowdowns were witnessed at Pathergatti, Charminar, Shahalibanda and Miralam Mandi areas in the city. The high prices of sacrificial animals failed to dampen the spirit of the devotees, who made a beeline to the livestock sale points at Chanchalguda, City College, Khilwat, Falaknuma, Darulshifa, Tolichowki, Bahadurpura, Jiyaguda, Musheerabad, Nampally and Mehdipatnam.
However, prices dropped significantly towards the evening, with the arrival of more animals from different parts of the State. A sheep weighing 10 kilogram was sold between Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 7,000.
Bakers did brisk business selling special bread used in preparing the mouth-watering double-ka-meetha . The popular khova (condensed milk), an ingredient used in preparing the sweet, was being sold at Rs. 220 a kilogram.
“The price fluctuated due to the festive season and will remain the same for the next few days,” a trader at the market said.
Hundreds of butchers from the adjoining districts of the Hyderabad made their way to city to the make the most of the demand. They are expected to charge between Rs. 400 and Rs. 500 for a sheep.
