Offering a major reprieve for motorists on the busy Tarnaka-Secunderabad stretch, the long awaited Road under Bridge (RuB) at Rail Nilayam has been completed and opened for traffic. The work is in progress on another similar vent nearby and is expected to be ready in the next few months.
On this major corridor where traffic congestions have been heavy in recent times due to the ongoing works for the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project, the new facility comes as a boon for motorists. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has spent Rs.34 crore for the RuBs on the corridors which witness long traffic jams particularly during the peak hours.
For creating the two vents, the civic body had paid Rs.28 crore to the South Central Railways (SCR) and another Rs.6.70 crore were spent on shifting utilities and creating access to the RuBs. The work had commenced in October 2011 after the designs of the vents which were two metre low by gradation compared to the existing RuB were cleared by the SCR.
Though as part of the inner ring road concept the civic body had widened the road stretch here to 150 feet, traffic would get stuck at the Rail Nilayam junction, which the new set of RuBs promises to ease. The new vent opened for traffic measures around 12 metres while the second one on which work is in progress would come up with 14 metres width. According to the GHMC officials, this project also included realignment and remodelling the storm water drain flowing at these spots.
Senior officials of the GHMC said having carved out first vent they were now concentrating on the second vent. “The works related to pipeline shifting and approach road are on and we hope to be able to open it also at the earliest,” he said.
