House to discuss pensions

November 19, 2014 11:45 pm | Updated 11:45 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telangana Assembly will take up a short notice discussion on social security pensions for old age people on Thursday. This announcement came after the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao intervened in a debate raised by the Congress members who stalled the proceedings of the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Opposition Congress disrupted the Telangana Assembly on reports about aged people committing suicide due to their failure to access social security pensions owing to weeding out of beneficiaries by the government.

As soon as the House commenced proceedings for the day, Congress members led by T. Jeevan Reddy surrounded the Speaker's podium holding aloft newspaper clippings that highlighted the suicides of people.

The repeated assurances of the Speaker and Legislative Affairs Minister T. Harish Rao that the government will table a statement on the controversy fell on the deaf ears of the Congress group.

The Speaker adjourned the House for nearly an hour, after which the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao made a statement.
