As many as 13 Transit-Oriented Growth Centres will be developed along the ORR

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is contemplating development of 13 Transit-Oriented Growth Centres (TOGC) along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to meet future demands in terms of growth in population, travel and economic activities.

The HMDA, which took up development of the 158-km ORR, has already brought to use about 122 km, and the balance stretch is expected to be completed by year-end.

The Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region has proposed extension and introduction of the Metro Rail, MMTS, suburban railway networks and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in the metropolitan region. The CTS also suggested 13 growth centres along the ORR interchanges with the proposed mass transit services.

Following this, the HMDA has decided to get concept plans prepared for TOGCs and appoint consultants for feasibility studies for a development plan of at least 2-km radius from the proposed interchanges with transit systems.

A thorough inventory of the identified spots, including the existing land cover and use, water bodies, village settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure, is to be prepared. The development strategy and investment plans are to be incorporated for two phases i.e., 2013-2021 and 2021-2041, and they include factors such as estimates on growth of economic activities, employment and population along with corresponding demand for infrastructure.
