There is not an inch of vacant space at Mathwale Doodh Ghar, nor is there a moment of peace. Come summer and this outlet near Shah Ali Banda junction in the Old City is abuzz with people swigging glasses of lassi or faluda .

The 47-year-old shop teems with customers who enter and leave every few minutes.

In fact, the demand is so high that its owner, Mohd. Mathwale, has set up a stall outside his outlet, since the space inside is not enough to accommodate the crowd.

“We don’t compromise on quality. Even today we make our own curd, ice-cream and khova. The milk we buy comes from villages like Maheshwaram and other places, to ensure it is pure. Also, I hire about 35-40 extra workers in summer due to the demand,” he mentioned. Mr. Mathwale and two of his brothers run two shops in the area.

Recalling how his business picked up in the late 1970s, he said, “I was in class 10 then. A glass of lassi was priced at Rs.2.50, and we were the ones who added ice-cream to make it tastier.”

The recipe and menu have not changed since his father, the late Moin Bhai, started the outlet in 1967.

“People come here because of the quality we maintain, which is why in spite of hiking prices, the demand does not drop,” he said.

A single glass of lassi and faluda is priced at Rs.30. They come with delicious toppings of ice-cream and cream.
