Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao commissioned the medium irrigation project across Palamvagu (Jellavagu), a minor tributary of the Godavari river near Mallapuram village in Venkatapuram Mandal here on Monday.
Accompanied by R&B minister Thummala Nageswar Rao, he released the water from the project.
The Palamvagu medium irrigation project envisages water supply to 10,132 acres in Venkatapuram and Wazedu mandals. The total reservoir capacity of Palamvagu is 1.260 TMC.
Mr Harish Rao said the Telangana government was working towards completion of all the pending projects which were initiated by earlier regimes. The state government would ensure water to every acre of land.
“The state government has allotted Rs 25,000 crore towards irrigation projects. This project was first proposed in 2005 during the Congress regime as part of their Jalayagnam project. However, it got washed away twice in floods. Now it was taken up and completed with a modern design and Rs 220 crore was spent on this project. We expect the project reaches the target of reaching more than 10,000 acres,” he said.
In view of the minister’s visit to the Maoist affected area, security has been beefed up in the agency areas of the district. Warangal IG Nagi Reddy and Superintendent of police R Bhaskaran monitored the security arrangements.
Owing to technical glitches in his helicopter, Harish Rao reached Mallapuram three hours late.
Bhadrachalam MLA Sunnam Rajaiah, MLC Balka Laxmi Narayana, DCMS Anjaiah, District Collector A Murali, Irrigation SE Srinivas Reddy, and others were present.
