ICAI Hyderabad asserts the girl is only a CA student; hints at probe only if a formal complaint is filed
Devaraja Reddy, chief coordinator of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)- Hyderabad, said the 21-year-old girl who allegedly hacked into industrialist Anil Ambani’s e-filing of income tax returns was a student of CA and not a member of ICAI even as ICAI main office on Saturday said it would conduct an inquiry in the matter. Mr. Reddy said that action could be initiated against her only if the latter is a member of ICAI and also only after she completes her CA course. “However, if the company is involved in hacking, ICAI can take action as it is against the ethical standards of ICAI. So far, we have not received any complaint against the company,” said Mr. Reddy. Manoj Daga & Company, the CA firm is where the girl was doing her articleship.
No criminal intent
Y. Tirupathaiah, chairman of Hyderabad branch, felt that there may not be any criminal intention behind her action. He said since she is yet to become a CA and there is no scope for action against her. Enquiry would be conducted if a complaint is lodged, he added.
PTI reports: Subodh Kumar Agrawal, president of ICAI, said the girl would be served a notice.
“The issue has been forwarded to the respective department,” he said. Asked whether any action would be taken against Manoj Daga & Company, the CA firm where the girl was doing her articleship, Agrawal said it was too early to say anything.
The girl allegedly hacked Ambani’s e-filing of IT returns, to find out details of his income and the tax he paid, according to Mumbai Police.
