A Karnataka Police Sub-Inspector, Mallikarjun Bande, who received bullet injuries in the head during a shootout at Gulbarga with wanted criminal Munna Darbadar on January 8, died here at Yashoda Hospital on Wednesday.

Another officer, ASI Udandappa, who was injured in the stomach in the incident, is recovering at Global Hospitals.

Union Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge called on ASI Udandappa and enquired about his health.

Global Hospitals CMD K. Ravindranath said the police official had responded well to the emergency abdominal surgery and would be discharged from the hospital in couple of days. Doctors said bullet injuries to Mr. Udandappa’s lower abdomen were so severe that a portion of his small intestine had to be removed during the surgery.

“But he has responded well to our treatment and is stable now,” Dr. Ravindranath added.

Critical condition

Doctors at Yashoda Hospitals said Mr. Bande was in a critical condition when he was admitted to the hospital on January 9.

On January 13, his vital organs, including kidneys, showed signs of failure, the doctors pointed out. He was on ventilator and dialysis support since then.

Later in day, Mr. Kharge also visited Yashoda Hospitals to interact with a close relative who was admitted to the hospital.
