The government has not granted permission to dig borewell in view of the fall in groundwater levels. However, permissions are being issued for digging borewells for drinking water.

The average groundwater level, which stood at 13.6 metres in the month of February, has fallen down to 14.19 metres as of now. It has been stated that the fall in the water level was registered as 1.8 metres within a month’s gap.

Hatnoora registered the highest fall in the water level in the district at 25.65 metres in March, which in February was 24.6 metres, followed by Gummadidala at 24.76 from 24.2 metres and Sangareddy at 23.02 from 21.8 metres.

The groundwater level at places where the situation was better in the past has also been going down. For instance, at Ameenpur the water level in the month of March stood at 2.38 metres compared to the previous month, which was at 2.1 metres. Similarly, at Vatpally 6.03 (previously 5.01) metres and Patncheru 7.42 (previously 7.6 metres) water level has seen a noticeable fall.

Presently, the ground water availability levels at Sangareddy district stood at 14.19 metres followed by Siddipet at 16.1 and Medak district 19.95.

“We are not issuing permissions for digging borewells. The ban is still in force. Permissions are being accorded for drinking water purposes only,” Mr. Venkateswara Rao told The Hindu .
