Preparing grounds for elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Telangana government has issued orders for delimitation of election wards as per the 2011 census figures.

The tenure of present 150-ward council comes to an end towards the year-end and the delimitation exercise is to be taken up to rationalise the ward division and in the process could end up adding 20 to 25 more wards. Citing recent High Court orders, the MA&UD government order G.O.Ms.12  issued on Wednesday directed the civic body to initiate the delimitation process.

The court orders followed petitions that sought delimitation of the GHMC wards with equal distribution of votes. As per the 2011 census, the population of GHMC is 67,31,790.
