The State Government is actively examining proposals to make provisions for fish passages in different reservoirs to enable them to move easily in the course of the river.

Fish passages or canals for fish enabling their migration has been contemplated as experience showed that structures in the course of rivers like irrigation projects, hydro power generation projects and others hamper free movement of migratory fish species. Long distance migration is the lifeline of many fish species for their physiological requirement like spawning, breeding, seasonal habitat change and related activities, but the absence of provisions for their free passage was affecting their reproduction.

Senior officials said stocking of fish was being taken up as one option, but it is not viable in the longer term as it will not replace the natural reproduction of fish. It was therefore decided to explore options for putting in place fish passages, a new concept, for enhancing productivity. The government has accordingly made provision for setting up fish passages in the three barrages planned in the prestigious Kaleshwaram Project. The government is understood to have sought the guidance of the Kolkata-based Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) in the modalities that should be followed for fish passes.

Suggestions are being sought on the model and design of the fish passes which are of increased importance for the restoration of free passage for fish and other aquatic species in rivers.

“Fish passages are the only way to make it possible for aquatic fauna to pass obstacles that block their up-river journey. Given the importance attached to fisheries sector in the State, we are seeking expert guidance in this regard to ensure significant growth in productivity in the medium and longer terms,” the official said.
