Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao has announced that the Telangana government intended to allot 22 acres of land to the Nalsar University of Law at Shamirpet, for the construction of academic staff college, hostel buildings, research centres and other facilities.
The promised land opposite to where the university exists, is presently in the possession of Judicial Academy, Mr.Rao said, and promised assistance for construction of the facilities. He delivered his address as the chief guest at the 15th annual convocation of the university here on Saturday.
He urged the university to start a three-year L.L.B. programme with 50 per cent quota for Telangana residents, and promised to fully finance the course on behalf of the State government.
Reminding the university, the importance of directly contributing to the local communities besides engaging with national and global developments, Mr. Rao also requested the university authorities to undertake extensive legal education programme in Telangana before extending it to other parts of the country.
It would be appropriate for the university to launch a Bar-at-Law programme for practising lawyers, and shorter continuing education courses for others, Mr.Rao said, and wished for the first such course to be started in Telangana.
City campus should also offer coaching to the aspirants of civil judge and higher judicial service examinations, he mentioned and took note of the fact that the city campus building needed renovation and refurbishment.
Mr. Rao commended the Nalsar’s land clinic’s work in Warangal district, and wished for similar programmes at the Shamirpet campus and city office for people to access government legal aid schemes.
A total of 406 candidates graduated from the university in various courses, including B.A., L.L.B. (Hons), LL.M., M.B.A., Ph.D. and others.
Of them, 216 students were awarded the degree at the convocation.
A total of 48 gold medals were given away to students for their achievements in different streams.
Vice-Chancellor Faizan Mustafa, in his welcome address and university report, announced that the university is going to host the 78th session of the Institut De Droit International (Institute of International Law) between September 3 and 10. This is only second time this conference is being held in Asia an four time outside Europe.
He spoke about the university’s collaboration with the Telangana government in revising various legislations, and organising workshops.
High Court Chief Justice and Chancellor of the university Ramesh Ranganathan conferred the degrees on the graduating students, while Mr.Rao, along with former Supreme Court judges S.S.M.Quadri and P.V.Reddi presented the gold medals.
