Police on Thursday rescued a goldsmith, allegedly kidnapped by eight persons for ransom eight days ago. Three persons were nabbed in connection with the abduction of Jhareswar Maity.
Police said the kidnappers were identified as Indrajith Kole (41) of West Bengal, Sanjay Kole (37) of Musheerabad and Sona Pandit (26) of Kawadiguda.
Indrajith and Sanjay are jewellery merchants, while Pandit is a goldsmith.
The trio, along with five friends – Asto, Akshay, Karthik, Romesh and Sonatan, abducted Jhareswar Maity from West Bengal after the latter’s friend Hiralal decamped with seven tolas of gold from Indrajith’s shop. Indrajith made Jhareswar responsible for the incident and wanted him to pay for the stolen gold.
A frightened Jhareswar ran away to Kolkata and stayed there for four years.
When he returned in search of a job at Ghansi Bazaar on August 18, Sonatan caught him and handed him over to Indrajith.
The abductors tied his hands with a chain and tortured him, demanding money for the stolen gold, police said.
The accused then began making ransom calls to the victim’s family who, in turn, lodged a complaint with the police.
Police traced the kidnappers’ hideout and rescued the goldsmith.
A hunt is on to nab the other five accused.
