With that kind of money, one could buy a Tata Nano. Or even a decent used car. Jaws dropped when the hammer went down at an auction for fancy vehicle registration numbers in the city on Tuesday.

The highest bid, for number 6666, was a whopping Rs.1,81,500 paid by a private company for its newly-acquired Rolls Royce.

The company, Volta Impex Pvt. Ltd, will now be using the vehicle with the number AP 09 CR 6666.

The auction for the favourite number, conducted by closed bid, was literally a nail-biting one.

There were three bidders for the number for which Rs.30,000 had to be deposited in advance.

Despite this, bidders are required to pay the amount they have quoted and drop it in a box.

Everyday, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. the bidders drop the forms and authorities open the box at 3 p.m.

The amount quoted by Volta Impex is the highest amount paid for a registration number in recent times, Regional Transport Officer S. Chandrasekhar said.
