After having asked Laxmi to offer prayers, the godman took the ornaments from the tiffin box and filled it with rice
A self-styled godman duped a couple at Babulreddy Nagar under Mailardevpally police station limits on Thursday and escaped with gold ornaments weighing 15 tola.
Wearing a yellow shirt and lungi, the godman, aged around 35, approached Giriramulu and Laxmi wooing them with the promise that he would ward off evils causing problems for the family. He gained the couple’s confidence when he told them that someone in the family had suffered health problems recently, and that two of their daughters were married. Special puja was required to be performed to their gold ornaments, he said.
Believing him, the couple allowed the godman inside. He performed puja using two lemons and asked Giriramulu to return after doing the same at the Shiva temple in Ibrahimpatnam. After Giriramulu’s departure, the godman asked Laxmi to bring jewellery to perform puja. He collected ornaments from her, sprinkled vermilion and turmeric on them and placed them in a tiffin box.
He then asked Laxmi to offer prayers before the portrait of the god in their house. When she went inside, he took the ornaments from the box and filled it with rice. After Laxmi returned, he told her to open the box only after he left. An hour later, Laxmi opened the box only to find the ornaments missing.
Police believe a three-member gang, which includes two women, could be involved in the incident.
The women had approached Laxmi on Wednesday on pretext of selling gold bangles.
Before leaving the house, they had collected details of the family from Laxmi. The godman might have approached the couple with information from the women.
