Children lined up holding the giant tricolour stretched from Musheerabad Municipal Park to Raja cinema theatre, covering a distance of 365 metres. At Begum Bazaar, another tricolour was held up by children. This one did better than 365 metres. It extended from M. J. Market and crossed Abids circle, a distance of one kilometre.
At Musheerabad, close to 3,000 children from 10 schools from the area turned up at the park to hold the massive tricolour and be a part of the celebrations. At Begum Bazaar, the students from St. Paul’s Hi-Tech High School participated in a flag run by holding the huge 1,000-metre flag and marching along the streets covering Goshamahal, M.J. Market, Abids, Siddiamber Bazaar and back.
“This is fun. We practised the whole week to perform a march and then hold the big flag. We are also looking forward for the sweet distribution programme and singing the national anthem,” said Kumar, a class five student from Martinet High School, Musheerabad.
Musheerabad corporator Saritha Govind, who organised the unfurling of the massive flag, said that 365 metres represented 365 days of the year. “We wanted to bring children from various schools in Musheerabad together to celebrate Independence Day. Over 3,000 children are taking part here,” she said.
Massive effort
Stitching such a massive Indian flag was no mean task. It took over three days of hard labour by three persons to stitch the flag. “After we completed the stitching, it took us half a day to fold the flag. Three men worked daily for 10 hours for three-and-a-half days to prepare this tricolour,” said tailor G. Satyanarayana of Balaji Garments, Sriram Nagar.
