As part of improving sanitation initiatives in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) this year will be acquiring 1,500 tricycles for door-to-door collection of garbage. Addition of a fleet of vehicles for shifting collected garbage to the dumping yard and setting up more dumper bins is also on the cards.
The civic body presently has a total of 5,638 rickshaws for house-to-house collection of garbage but of these, almost 2,691 rickshaws were in damaged condition. Carrying out the refuse collection exercise with only 2,947 rickshaws that are in working condition, tenders have been finalised and supply orders placed for supply of 1,500 new tricycles to cover all the wards during the year 2014-15.
Also, in response to a question during the GHMC Council meeting on Saturday, it was informed that at present a total of 564 garbage lifting vehicles were in use across the city and the numbers included 458 vehicles of the civic body and 106 hired ones. Delays in acquiring more of these vehicles has been attributed to ban on purchase of new vehicles but the civic body had finally got a nod from the government for procurement of 44 new garbage lifting vehicles for which tenders are invited.
For this year, the GHMC has also made plans to acquire 750 dumper bins for which an amount of Rs.2.67 crores is being earmarked and, as per replies provided at the general body, the process of procurement is on. In the last three years, more than 2,200 dumper bins were purchased for use in different parts of the city including 440 bins acquired in the year 2011-12, 1,344 in 2012-13 and 450 bins bought into use last year.
