GHMC to spend ₹400 cr for water bodies restoration

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to take up restoration of 20 water bodies across the twin cities at an estimated cost of ₹ 401.98 crore and the proposal has been sent to the Government for approval by the Standing Committee at its meeting held on Thursday.

Presided over by Mayor B. Rammohan and in the presence of Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy, the panel has also decided to construct a retailing wall, check dam-cum-bridge on the Banjara drain at a cost of ₹ 89.39 crore.

A brand new library building is also to be constructed at Adaiahnagar in Secunderabad by demolishing the existing dilapidated building at a cost of ₹ 3 crore. Other issues cleared were - land acquisition costing ₹ 31 lakh at Bholapur for road widening, approval for disposal of bodies through electric furnaces at S.R. Nagar and L.B. Nagar under the public, private partnership mode (₹ 4000 a body), promotion to 90-odd senior assistants and so on.

Another key decision to empower the Chief City Planner to seize illegal buildings by amending the GHMC Act was also cleared, according to an official spokesman.
