GHMC to go green

January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:07 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Towards improving green cover in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to take up large-scale afforestation initiatives with 25 lakh saplings and also provide plants and saplings at nominal charges for those willing to join the endeavour. Green Service Centres will also be opened in major parks by the civic body.

The GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer, Somesh Kumar, who held a meeting on improving greenery in the city, here on Monday stressed the need to take up tree plantations in government lands, around lakes, graveyards and educational institutions to meet the expected green cover of 33 per cent. “This is not just the duty of the GHMC but also the responsibility of all citizens, residential welfare associations and non-governmental organisations,” he said. Massive road widening and road repair works are in the pipeline and the civic body will be planting trees on either side of these roads to provide a green environment, he said.
