To control the stray dog population and minimize the cases of rabies infection, the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) has re-initiated the pet adoption programme. Those who are interested in adopting a stray can contact the local GHMC office and the officials will help with the process. The initiative will be implemented with the help of animal activists and NGO’s.
On Sunday, an adoption centre was inaugurated at the stray animal shelter in Jeedimetla. The volunteers and members of NGO’s and Residential Welfare Associations were briefed about the issues and the guidelines related to animal adoptions by the officials. Later, a stray puppy was adopted by a member of an NGO, Sarva Jeeva Samithi.
According to the veterinary wing officials around 1,00,000 stray dogs are sterilized per year as part of the sterilization programme out of a population of approximately 6,00,000 dogs present in GHMC limits.
The veterinary officials said that due to migration of a large number of street dogs from adjoining Gram Panchayaths and Nagar Panchayaths and due to the increasing number of abandoned pet dogs, street dogs are being seen as a menace in the GHMC limits.
