GHMC plans easy-to-remove metal frame along Hussainsagar

November 24, 2014 11:41 pm | Updated 11:41 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

To avoid cumbersome removal and refitting of grilles at idol immersion points of Hussainsagar Lake, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to set up an easy to remove metal framework.

The water body with permanently-fixed metal barricading along the shoreline is the main idol immersion point during the festivals of Vinayak Chaturthi and Durga Puja. To facilitate the immersion, authorities have been cutting the grilles along immersion platforms each year and fix it later.

“We have to cut it with gas-cutters and after the immersion, put it back which was cumbersome and expensive,” said an official with GHMC, not wishing to be quoted.

As a step towards easy removal and re-fixing, the civic body has decided to go for nut-and-bolt barricading at these platforms. A total of 200 such metal grilles have been finalised and the work of putting them in place will commence from November 23 and completed by the month-end, said the GHMC Central Zone Commissioner, N. Sathyanarayana.

“It will help ease the process of preparing for the idol immersion activity during the festivities. Till now, gas-cutters were used and portions abruptly cut down to create space for idols to be immersed,” he said.

Since the new framework comes as nut-and-bolt, it just could be dismantled and set up again more easily, added Dr. Sathyanarayana.
