GHMC drive on safe food lauded

Parliamentary Committee appreciates GHMC drive against restaurants, eateries

The continuous drive by the city’s civic body against erring hotels and restaurants has won appreciation from the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

On Thursday, Chairman of the Committee J.C. Diwakar Reddy praised the efforts of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for ensuring that hygienic conditions are maintained at hotels and eating establishments. The Committee members felt that by imposing fines and seizing the eating establishments for serving unhygienic food in polluted environment was showing results and acting as a deterrent.

The Chairman along with the senior officials of various state government departments met in the city. The Committee members members suggested to Chief Secretary SP Singh to strengthen the system by involving various government departments like Civil Supplies for effective implementation of the rules.

They felt that with these measures people can get healthy food and essential commodities without any health hazards.

Commissioner of GHMC B.Janardhan Reddy who also participated in the meeting explained to the Committee members about various initiatives of the GHMC. He said that in the run up to the inspections on eateries, they had convened meetings in a phased manner with hoteliers, food establishments and meat traders and instructed them to maintain hygiene besides using only stamped meat from the GHMC approved slaughter houses.

The Commissioner informed the members that received a lot of complaints against hotels following which they decided swing in to action impose penalties wherever necessary.
