‘GES will give visibility to talent pool here’

It will make entrepreneurship a mainstream activity, says Jayesh Ranjan

As the countdown begins for the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Summit, the Telangana government is pulling out all the stops to make it a memorable event and give Hyderabad and Telangana State the visibility that they deserve as an investment destination.

Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Industry, who is in the thick of things overseeing the preparations for the mega event being jointly organised by India and the U.S., said apart from sheer visibility of the State capital at the global platform, it would help take the entrepreneurship activity to the mainstream.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, Mr. Ranjan explained how the global event was expected to make a difference to Hyderabad and the State. “People may have heard of Hyderabad, its infrastructure, convention centres and airport which is rated high in quality of living. But seeing is believing,” he said.

He clarified that the GES was different as people who would attend it were not big industrialists. They were young entrepreneurs who are looking to scale up their career. “The idea is that each of those entrepreneurs will succeed in catching the eye and interest of some investor or the other. It’s like match-making,” he said. Telangana’s industrial policy and TS-ipass spoke highly of its investment climate. Yet, Hyderabad is considered smaller than other metros. So hosting an event of this kind would give massive visibility to the large talent pool here, Mr. Ranjan elaborated.

The event would help a city like Hyderabad come under the radar of big-ticket investors and break the monopoly of other major cities, he said. Secondly, the event would help people here understand the global trends. By celebrating entrepreneurship, the GES would inspire a large number of talented youth to become entrepreneurs and change the conventional mindset of society that still thinks finding a job is a safe option than entrepreneurship.
