‘Generate wealth out of waste'

The overflowing landfill sites, ever increasing population and limited land mass to dump garbage will make it tough for the public in future to find a suitable place for garbage disposal. Unless, the younger generation recognises the virtues of recycling and embrace it, the future of garbage disposal in cities will remain bleak.

This message was loud and clear in the National Recycling Day celebrations held at Nizam College Grounds on Thursday. Close to 10,000 students from 130 schools participated in the National Recycling Day celebrations, a relatively new concept, mooted by ITC in association with Ramky Group, to spread awareness on recycling waste and generating wealth out of waste.

Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy, administered a pledge to the children to take up source segregation and support recycling. “You must urge your parents not to purchase big fuel guzzling vehicles. You should teach elders about the advantages of recycling,” the Union Minister urged.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah asked students to recognise the importance of waste recycling and commended the WOW project that aims at source segregation and recovery of recyclable materials for further use. To encourage children, the Chief Minister distributed awards and certificates to school students who had contributed to the WOW project. The Recycling Day celebrations were also marked by a lot of fanfare and cultural events based on conservation of nature and recycling. The Nizam College grounds came alive with the roars of ‘WOW' (wealth out of waste), an initiative launched by ITS company to in association with Ramky group to recycle waste.

Metro project

Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy on Thursday has said that the metro project in Hyderabad had received the final ‘go-ahead' signal. “I personally cleared the project yesterday in New Delhi. Now the metro project will be a reality and public will have a reliable public transport facility in twin cities,” he said.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, who was also present in the function, thanked Mr. Reddy for his efforts to get the required clearances.

“Metro rail will help public by reducing the travel time,” he said.
