The surgical team at Gandhi Hospital have successfully conducted its third kidney transplant on a 23-year-old youngster Vishal, who received a matching kidney from his mother Vimal on Monday.
Hospital doctors have termed the procedure as pre-emptive kidney transplant, in which the patient underwent transplant before undergoing dialysis for failed kidneys.
Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital M. Chandra Shekhar said the surgery is an attempt to set-up an active kidney transplant programme in the hospital, which despite several attempts in the past never took-off in a big way.
The young patient, Vishal, hails from Udgir town of Latur district in Maharashtra and approached Dr. Pradeep Deshpande Professor in Nephrology, in the hospital, for treatment.
“Usually kidney failure patients are kept under dialysis for a long time before they get a matching kidney. However, in this case, the mother’s kidney was a match and that’s why the transplant was possible. There was no need for us to keep Vishal under dialysis anymore. The surgery went off well and the patient is under observation,” said Dr. Deshpande.
The hospital authorities took the lead to contact philanthropists for contribution to take up the surgery.
“The patient was from Maharashtra and did not have Arogyasri coverage and that’s why we collected close to Rs. 50,000 for purchase of disposables. We will take up similar surgeries free of cost under Arogyasri scheme in future for the needy,” Dr. Deshpande said.
Dr. M. Chandra Shekar and Dr. Deshpande led a team of surgeons from Nephrology, Urology and Anaesthesia including Dr. Jagadeeshwar Rao, Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar, Dr. Upender Goud, Dr. Venkateshwarlu, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Dr. Jayaram Reddy.
“The patient is under close observation and has to be administered immunosuppressive drugs so that the transplanted kidney is not rejected,” doctors said.
