V.K. Saraswat, Director General, DRDO and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, on Monday emphasised the need to customise technology for social and economic transformation of the people. Speaking at the launch of the book “The People’s Scientist - Dr. Y. Nayudamma”, a biography written by retired Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, K. Chandrahas, he said the need of the hour was to ensure that fruits of the research reached the people. “Technology needs to be aligned to the requirement of the people and that’s what Dr. Nayudamma did,” he said.

He said Dr. Nayudamma was truly a “people’s scientist” and gave a new direction to various laboratories when he was Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Dr. Saraswat admitted that DRDO was finding it difficult to take some of its products to the people due to “disconnect between the technology and what the people want”.

The first copies of the book were handed over to Anjana, grand-daughter of Dr. Nayudamma and her actor husband, Nani.

Former Director of State Council of Higher Education, Prof. C. Subba Rao said the book’s narrative also dealt with the social responsibility of a scientist.

Former Director of Collegiate Education, K. Lakshminarayana expressed the hope that the book would inspire youngsters to take science as a career.
