Upset over their poor performance in Intermediate first-year exams, four students ended their lives within hours of announcement of the results on Friday.

Police attributed the alleged suicides to poor performance or failure in examinations. The incidents were reported one each in Kukatpally, Vanasthalipuram, Jagadgirigutta and Medipally.

Kukatpally police said that a 17-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging at his residence at Khaitlapur in Moosapet. The victim was identified as Katraj Sai Kumar, an Intermediate first-year student from MNR Junior College in Kukatpally. Police said Kumar took the extreme step as he failed in four subjects.

Based on a complaint lodged by victim’s father, K Shekar, police said that Kumar did not respond when he tried his number around 11.30 a.m.

“Shekar called his neighbour Santosh and asked him to check whether Kumar was there at home or not,” said K Bhanu Prasad, sub-inspector, Kukatpally.

Santosh with the help of locals broke open the door only to find Kumar hanging from a ceiling fan, he said. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared brought dead, Mr Prasad said.

Meanwhile, Kumar's cousin Chaitanya said, “we never thought that he would end his life over exam results.”

Around 11 a.m, he checked the results with his friends at our relatives place and at 11.30 he committed suicide.

In the second incident, a 17-year-old girl, A Vandana, who was depressed over scoring poor marks in the examination committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan. The incident took place around 11 a.m. at her residence at Subhadranagar under Vanasthalipuram police limits.

“She scored 325 out of 440 marks,” said D Vijay, Sub-inspector, Vanasthalipuram. The girl resorted to the extreme step when her 12-year-old brother was at home and parents had gone out to work. “She was pursuing her Bi.PC first-year from Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Dilsukhnagar,” he said.

Vandana's father works at a pharmacy store while her mother is a teacher.

In the third incident, Srinitya (16), an MPC first-year student ended her life by jumping from the fourth floor of her apartment in Ushodaya Nagar under Jagadgirigutta police limits. According to K Venkateshwarlu, sub-inspector, Jagadgirigutta, the incident took place around 11.30 a.m when no one was present in their house.

Srinitya was a student of Sri Gayathri Junior College in Chintal and failed in four subjects.

Meanwhile, in the fourth incident, another Inter first-year student, D. Varsha, 16, ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Medipally. The victim failed in all her CEC subjects.
