Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan has asked the GHMC to focus more on improving greenery, besides adopting better garbage disposal system and installing new road signage boards as part of the city beautification works being taken up for the prestigious COP-11 event next month.
“We should make Hyderabad a world-class city and amenities here must make foreigners include the city in their travel circuit,” he said after inaugurating an exhibition of sculptures at Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts (JNAFA) University, Masab Tank, here on Friday.
He wanted the authorities concerned to provide amenities to road users and ensure road discipline. There should be enough footpaths and maximum carriageways for motorists to achieve this, said Mr. Narasimhan.
He said it was high time to promote usage of solar energy and bicycles for transportation. In tune with the beautification works taken up, maintenance of all the facilities after the COP 11was equally important, the Governor said.
GHMC, in association with JNAFA, organised a scrap welding sculpture camp and artists from different States and abroad attended. Over 50 scrap welding sculptures and 15 stone sculptures carved by artists and students would be installed at major traffic islands and parks in the city. The exhibition would be organised for a week and would be open to all.
Road repairs
GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu said 22 roads with over 125-km length had been identified for repairs and 62 BT roads for re-carpeting. Works pertaining to junction improvements, parks, lane marking, street and door numbering was being taken up. Efforts were on to improve 52 sidewalks and 57 stormwater drains, he added.
Major Industries Minister J. Geetha Reddy, GHMC Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain and others spoke on the occasion.
