As the fate of much-talked Begumpet link road hangs in balance, two flyovers constructed beneath the Greenlands flyover as part of link road project are failing to serve the actual purpose and now became parking lots for the owners of nearby commercial establishments.
Buses of private educational institutions, cars and two-wheelers are parked on the two flyovers without taking permission from officials concerned. A few vendors are making brisk business by putting up make-shift stalls on the flyovers, complained residents.
“I feel that flyovers are not safe as vehicles are parked without any permission. It really dangerous to see abandoned vehicles parked here more so when a high alert was sounded in the city,” Y. Alkeya, a student, said
Mohammed Zameer, an auto rickshaw driver, said: “If the flyover is opened, then it would be very useful for motorists. They can reach Balkampet quickly instead of coming from the ever-busy Ameerpet stretch from Greenlands flyover.”
Acquisition of land followed by the delay in shifting water and sewerage lines are leading to problems in completing the works. Officials said they had finished 70 to 80 per cent of works on Suprabhatnagar and others pertaining to Fathenagar side will began shortly.
GHMC Engineer-in-Chief Dhan Singh explained, “We will try to resolve all the problems linked to the project soon and complete the work by August end.”
Officials said once this link road comes into operation, the distance between Begumpet, Ameerpet and Fatehnagar can be reduced by at least 2.5 km.
While one lane of the two-km long link road begins from behind Sri Hanuman temple in Begumpet, another starts at Katta Maisamma temple next to Hyderabad Public School (HPS) and connects Balkampet and Fatehnagar flyover. Motorists from Secunderabad proceeding towards Fatehnagar can use the lane abutting Varun Motors at the beginning of Greenlands flyover, go underneath the flyover to reach the recently constructed road-under-bridge connecting the link road behind Sri Hanuman temple.
In the opposite direction, commuters going towards Secunderabad from Balkampet and the Sanatnagar side can directly use the link road connecting HPS road adjacent to the Katta Maisamma temple.
