The first woman bus driver of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), V. Saritha, who hails from Samsthan Narayanpur mandal of Nalgonda district in Telangana, may become the first woman bus driver with Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) in the coming months.

Ms. Saritha, who is working with DTC from April 20, 2015, expressed her wish to be a driver with TSRTC by meeting Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy in the Secretariat on Friday. She submitted a representation to the Minister along with her academic qualifications.

The Minister examined her representation and discussed the matter with the officials of TSRTC immediately and stated that Ms. Saritha would be given priority whenever drivers’ recruitment is be taken up. As such, there was some quota reserved for women in RTC but women candidates had applied only for conductor jobs in the past and no woman had applied for driver’s post.

However, qualified women drivers would be given opportunity in TSRTC in the coming days. Stating that the Telangana Government was providing driving training to women and had provided She Cabs to 40 such women after arranging bank finance, Mr. Mahender Reddy said. Ms. Saritha would be provided with a She Cab if she was interested.

Before joining DTC, Ms. Saritha worked as a cab driver with Azad Foundation in Delhi and won several awards, including woman achiever award. She started her driving career as an auto driver in Hyderabad in the past.
