To encourage students to learn Urdu in areas where they have seldom been exposed to the language, the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions (TMREIS) will start with teaching the basics in its schools.
Officials said several students belonging to the minority community in Khammam and parts of Nalgonda and Warangal districts have not been exposed to the language.
Explaining the conditions, a TMREIS official said, “The culture in those areas is much different than what we see in Hyderabad or Ranga Reddy districts. Most students belonging to the minority community in Khammam and some other parts of the State are better conversant in Telugu than Urdu.”
Speaking to The Hindu , TMREIS Secretary B. Shafiullah said while students from the minority community have to opt for Telugu as the first language, the second language will be Urdu. “We are starting with the alphabet of the language. The course has been designed in such a way that it will be easy for the students to learn.” Officials said that non-minority students have the option of taking Hindi as a secondly language, if they so desire. They maintained that there is no imposition of the language on any student.
