Firecracker and sweet shops, jewellery and automobile showrooms attract many

A festive mood enveloped the State capital on Monday with the festival of lights turning all-pervading. The illuminated main thoroughfares of the city as well government buildings, malls, multiplexes, showrooms and temples, which were all decked-up to the hilt, permeated a feel good charm.

Last-minute shoppers continued to flock commercial establishments. Firecracker and sweet shops, jewellery and automobile showrooms and florists attracted a large number of families, eager to get the best deals to gift on the occasion.

Cracker shops do good business

Despite escalating prices, all roads for people looking for firecrackers led to the wholesale shops near Imperial Gardens in Secunderabad and various other places. Even the neighbourhood makeshift firecracker ‘pandals’ did good business and attracted huge crowds which continued to throng the outlets till late into the night.

The sale of crackers which was sluggish earlier, picked up on Monday. “This is my nephew’s first visit to India and I wanted to make it a memorable Diwali for him. We have already purchased an assorted cracker gift box for Rs. 1,300. The crackers are expensive but we are looking for more,” said Sidharth Anand, a buyer at Paradise.

There was no dearth of options for the health conscious who wanted to avoid sweets. Wrapped in multicoloured gift boxes, dry fruit baskets at sweet and bakery shops were in huge demand. “Unlike sweets, dry fruits can be stored for a long time and they are healthy too. We decided to opt for them instead of sweets this year,” said P. Sagar, a shopper at Himayathnagar.

Puja articles

Tailor shops, cell phone outlets, shopping malls and electronic showrooms, which had come up with attractive discounts were bustling with activity all through even as families hit the local markets to purchase ‘diyas’ and other articles required for the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the presiding deity of wealth.

Frequent eye injuries during Diwali made ophthalmologists appeal to the public, especially children, to exercise caution.

The physicians recommended that firecrackers should be purchased only from the authorised manufacturers.
