The Osmania University Teachers’ Association (OUTA) on Thursday has resolved not to sign the joining reports of the candidates recently selected to the Ph.D courses till K. Narender and M. Srinath Reddy, faculty of the Department of Communication and Journalism, join the department again.
The OUTA president, B. Satyanarayana said that both the teachers were on leave fearing for their safety and it was the responsibility of the university administration to ensure that all the teachers were “safe and confident to discharge duties without fear”.
Dr. Narender was punched last month by a student in front of the Vice-Chancellor in his chambers which led to the teachers launching a protest demanding security on the issue of Ph.D admissions. A few days ago a group of students assaulted Prof. Laxmaiah, Dean, Students’ Welfare, and Head of Geography Department over a new course. The OUTA said stringent action should be taken against people involved in the assaults and held a dharna at the OU administrative building on Thursday protesting against what they called increasing ‘intimidating threats and attacks’ on the teachers.
The dharna was addressed by Chukka Ramaiah and K. Nageshwar, MLCs; Prof. Laxmaiah and former OU Vice Chancellor, T. Tirupati Rao among others. The speakers condemned the attacks and said such atmosphere doesn’t augur well for the university as a whole. “The administration has failed to curb the repeated attacks and we demand security to teachers and action against the culprits,” Prof. Satyanarayana, later said in a statement. The OUTA had originally called for a mass dharna on Monday itself after Prof. Laxmaiah was assaulted but postponed it due to the visit of a UGC expert committee.
The UGC had recently recognised OU as University with Potential for Excellence, which would ensure additional funds to improve research facilities and other academic activities.

Teaching faculty in the state and in entire India have become a
laughing stock from primary to university level. The faculty eye on
government jobs and not towards duties. From getting the job in the
university to promotions, they use various channels including
money, caste, region etc.We cannot find not even 10% of the faculty from
outside the concerned university area. The private schools have
talented teachers and from all all parts of India and various
sections. It is open secret how the Doctorates are awarded.Students
never attend compulsory academic requirements and majority of the
scholars never conduct experiments and university never bother to
check how the students are doing their research without any facility.
The universities are housing anti social elements and the teachers
have taken active role in the disturbances for and against telangana
since last 4 years. When the cow is eating the crop, how we can say
the younger ones shall not enter in the field?
If teachers have to fear from those who don't get admission into Ph.D,
imagine what will be the situation after such students get admission
by coercion. The state govt and the politicians (and a good number of
undeserving teachers) may have brought this situation over a period of
time. State-funded universities are the only source of higher
education for the first-generation educated students, poor and middle
class and the socially weaker sections. Weakening of these
institutions (probably deliberately) is one way of keeping a large
section of the population disempowered in this age of knowledge and
competition. It is politics.
The university is becoming a den for people who believe that it is
their birthright to have things their way. While most of the students
have come to get themselves educated, some mischief mongers have
created an atmosphere of tension using flimsy grounds of caste and
social background to behave in a manner which suits them. By indulging
in activities which are bound to create a tense atmosphere, a sense of
underlying unease was being created which has now come out into the
open. While other universities are looking towards research and
progress, the OU campus is always muddled in strife and controversy.
Hope some solution comes about
