Ayacutdars of Sangareddy cheruvu in Kalluru mandal staged a protest here on Tuesday, squatting outside the office of Superintending Engineer of Minor Irrigation (IB division), to demand protection of decades-old tank to enable them to harness their irrigation potential.

A group of aggrieved farmers from Kalluru, Lakshmipuram and Pullaiah Banjara villages squatted at the TDP MLA from Sattupalli Sandra Venkata Veeraiah, who accompanied the farmers, apprised irrigation officials of woes of ayacutdars of the Sangareddy tank.

Mr. Veeraiah alleged the departments concerned had failed to fix the full tank level (FTL) boundary of the tank, undermining the interests of ayacutdars mostly belonging to weaker sections. He demanded that the FTL boundaries of the tank be fixed forthwith. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the officials for protection of the tank, which was included in Mission Kakatiya for restoration, and to rejuvenate the water body.

The officials concerned reportedly told the ayacutdars that legal options were being explored to get the stay order issued by a court on a petition filed by a local farmer, vacated and commence the tank restoration work under Mission Kakatiya soon.
