Facebook continues to be the most preferred social networking playground with 76 per cent teenagers having an account of their own – the figure was 86 per cent in 2012. Forty-eight per cent of urban teenagers post on Facebook once in every three days.
Google+ is becoming popular but Orkut is history. Twitter is complex, and therefore not popular, a nationwide GenY survey conducted by software giant TCS revealed. The survey was held among 18,196 high school students of the 12-18 age group who participated in the company’s IT Wiz programme, held between July and December 2013, across 14 Indian cities including Hyderabad.
The participants responded to a questionnaire distributed at each of the centres, where it was found that 87 per cent high school students thought the social media had made them aware of current affairs, 53 per cent have more than 120 friends, 60 per cent have over 120 friends in mini metros, a press release said. Nine of 10 urban teenagers have phones. Tablets are as popular as mobile phones both in metros and smaller urban areas. Seven of 10 urban teenagers shop online and the movement has been from movie tickets to high value items.
“Our annual survey of high-school students shows that urban teenagers are adopting new social platforms quickly, using them in multiple ways and leading the way in driving change,” said Ajoy Mukherjee, executive vice-president and global head (HR) of TCS.
The survey also suggested that the professionals of tomorrow would be socially active, highly adaptable to new technologies and extremely aware of the world around them, he added. The survey can be viewed on www.tcs.com
