In a tragic incident, an ex-serviceman, who came to perform puja of his newly-purchased car at the Sai Baba Temple in Marredpally on Thursday, rammed the vehicle into a group of beggars after losing control over it, killing an unsuspecting woman beggar.

Gouramma (50), died on the spot, while Lakshmamma (60), sustained injuries on her leg.

Ratnam (50), of Mahendra Hills, who purchased the pre-owned Maruti Alto, was at the temple to perform the puja in the morning after parking the vehicle in a lane close to the temple.

As some beggars had lined up close to his car, he tried to reverse the vehicle before moving forward. “After reversing it, he changed the gear and slammed the accelerator,” Marredpally SI N. Srisailam said.

The car ploughed into Gouramma and Lakshmamma, killing the former on the spot. The latter, who injured her leg, was taken to a hospital. She was discharged later.

A case of rash and negligent driving resulting in death was registered against Ratnam.
